Explanation of table from California Environmental Engineering

This test was relatively short in elapsed time compared with some of the previous testing. In those tests, it was noticed that some changes take place slowly over time. When the testing is extended, considerable improvements in fuel consumption and NOx are seen.  This test, while short, shows compelling reductions in particulates and an impressive score for NOx despite the short timeframe.

The columns of results are:

BSHC – Hydrocarbons are not at a significantly high level at the start so the benefit which is apparent immediately and continuously, is not important compared to other emissions.

BSCO – Carbon monoxide, like hydrocarbons, does not represent a significant problem at the start and unstable outcome, although positive, is not of great importance.

BSNOX – Nitrogen oxide emissions are significantly reduced but even the substantial 22% improvement would be expected to increase further if testing were to continue as this trend was seen in previous testing.

BSFC – Fuel consumption improves over time as the engine’s computer adjusts to the changes brought by Viscon. This test was not oriented to gaining better fuel economy and was terminated prior to the time when fuel economy benefits would have become apparent.

W/bhp – There is no information currently shown that explains the small improvement in horsepower.

Particulates. – This is the main finding. The 95.6% reduction is particulates is very significant and will be of importance to environmentalists as it represents a major gain in reducing a very harmful emission that is considered cancerous.
